Driving excellence: Annie Nguyen on elevating clinical quality across Icon

We sat down with Annie Nguyen, Icon’s newly appointed Manager of Clinical Quality & Governance for ASEAN, to explore her passion for patient safety, her vision for harmonising care standards, and how her role will shape the future of oncology care across the region.

1. What does your new role as Manager, Clinical Quality & Governance for ASEAN involve?

In my new role, I oversee the clinical governance frameworks across all Icon centres in ASEAN, ensuring they remain aligned with both international and local healthcare standards and regulations. I am responsible for driving quality improvement initiatives, conducting audits, and managing clinical risk across the region.

A key part of my work involves collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams to standardise best practices across all centres. I also lead education and training programs designed to strengthen clinical quality and enhance patient safety.

2. What does “quality care” mean to you personally?

To me, quality care means delivering treatment that is safe, effective, and truly patient-centered. It means ensuring every patient receives care that aligns with the latest evidence-based standards while also meeting their individual needs. Quality care also requires continuous monitoring and improvement so we can keep pace with evolving treatment protocols and patient needs.

3. What excites you most about driving clinical governance at a regional level?

What excites me most is the opportunity to harmonise care standards across diverse healthcare systems and create alignment in how clinical quality is delivered. I’m also motivated by the ability to share best practices across countries and build a more consistent, high-quality patient experience throughout the region.

4. How do you see these initiatives improving the patient experience across ASEAN?

These initiatives will enhance consistency in clinical practice across all centres, ensuring patients receive the same high standard of care regardless of location. They will also help reduce clinical risks and improve patient safety by embedding standard governance processes into daily operations.

By promoting adherence to evidence-based best practices and encouraging shared learning, we can drive ongoing innovation in how care is delivered across ASEAN.

5. What’s one area of clinical governance you’re passionate about improving?

I’m particularly passionate about strengthening clinical audit and compliance processes to ensure consistent adherence to evidence-based standards. This involves improving accuracy, minimising errors, and ultimately optimising patient outcomes. I also believe in driving transparency and implementing corrective actions that support continuous improvement across all aspects of care.

6. What’s the most rewarding part of your work so far?

The most rewarding part of my work has been seeing measurable improvements in patient safety and treatment outcomes as a result of our initiatives. It is incredibly fulfilling to contribute to a robust governance framework that upholds a high standard of oncology care across the region.
