What is surgery?

Surgery refers to the treatment of a wide range of conditions through the removal or repair of organs and tissues within the body. This may involve lasers, ultrasound, scalpels, probes or needles, delivered via invasive or minimally invasive techniques.

How is surgery used to treat cancer?

Surgery that is used to diagnose, stage and treat cancer is known as oncologic surgery. This is one of the three most common types of cancer treatments alongside chemotherapy and radiation therapy. A surgical oncologist is a surgeon who specialises in the removal of cancerous tissue during surgery and works closely alongside other oncologists such as medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and haematologists to provide multidisciplinary care.

The type of surgical procedure used to treat cancer differs depending on the type, size and stage of the cancer and its location within the body. Surgery may be used to remove cancerous tumours, identify whether cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes, reconstruct areas of the body or relieve symptoms for people with advanced cancer.
