Biography

A/Prof James Morton AM is an experienced clinical haematologist at Icon Cancer Centre South Brisbane and Icon Cancer Centre Chermside, and is Director of Haematology at Icon Group. He was born in Brisbane and received his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Queensland in 1987 (University Gold Medal). A/Prof Morton completed general internal medicine training in 1991 before undertaking specialist training in clinical haematology and stem cell transplantation at the Royal Brisbane and Mater Hospitals (1992-1995). From 1996 – 1997 A/Prof Morton was an international fellow at the prestigious Fred Hutchinson Cancer Centre, Seattle.

In 1998 A/Prof Morton returned to Australia as staff specialist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and joined Icon (formerly known as Haematology & Oncology Clinics of Australasia). He is an accredited specialist at Mater Private Hospital, Greenslopes Private Hospital, and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, and also regularly attends St Andrew’s Ipswich Private Hospital.

He is experienced in caring for a wide range of malignant and non-malignant blood disorders with particular interest in leukaemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, stem cell transplantation and clinical apheresis. A/Prof Morton has published widely in these fields.

In January 2015 A/Prof Morton was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to children with Autism Spectrum Disorders through not-for-profit organisations, and to medicine in the field of oncology. In June 2020 he was named 2020 Queensland Great for his contribution to oncology and advocacy for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Philanthropic interests

  • Leukaemia Foundation Queensland – A/Prof Morton was a Board Member from 2000 – 2008, creating and initiating the World’s Greatest Shave for a Cure
  • AEIOU Foundation – which provides specialised early childhood programs for children for Autism, and was established by A/Prof Morton and his wife Louise in 2004 as a result of their own personal experiences in raising a child with this condition.
