Dr Ong Kong Wee graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1997 with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Bristol in 2003, and shortly after was accepted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 2007. Throughout his specialist training, Dr Ong continued to focus on the diagnosis and management of breast cancer using the latest evidence and techniques.

Dr Ong was the Founder of the SingHealth Duke Breast Centre, which has the highest patient volume among public institutions in Singapore treating the full spectrum of breast conditions. His key interest is in minimally invasive and reconstructive surgery for breast cancer. With his skills and experience, he often manages local and overseas patients with complex conditions.

Being dually trained as a clinician and a researcher, Dr Ong pioneered novel treatment for breast cancer. He was the first surgeon in Singapore to perform Intra-Operative Radiotherapy for early breast cancer achieved in 2012. He has also published in many top medical journals including Nature Genetics, Lancet Oncology and Clinical Cancer Research.

Throughout his career, Dr Ong maintained an active role in medical education and training, including appointments at notable institutions such as Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and SingHealth. He has trained many breast surgeons in Asia and is frequently invited to lecture at local and international breast cancer conferences, as well as to conduct training and workshops throughout the region.
