Advice and support to cope with a cancer diagnosis in your family

Learning that your child has cancer is a devastating moment for any parent. You may experience a range of emotions, from anger, sadness, fear, guilt, denial, to simply feeling numb, unable to process what is happening or comprehend all the information you are receiving. It is important to understand there is no right or wrong way to feel. Coming to terms with what lays ahead can be overwhelming, in addition to the ongoing stress of appointments and treatments while caring for your family.

It’s important to remember that you play a significant role in how your child copes with their diagnosis. Focusing on supporting your child and family with love and reassurance can also help you cope throughout this difficult time.

You are not alone. We will walk this journey together with you.

Practical ways to care for yourself and support your family

The below tips may help you throughout your child’s diagnosis and treatment and help you continue to be a beacon of support for your loved ones:

  • Asking for support from your care team, who can connect you and your family with allied health professionals such as psychologists and counsellors
  • Letting close family and friends know if they can help around the house or care for your children
  • Taking time out for yourself to focus on your physical and mental wellbeing. Some people find exercise therapeutic, while others choose to write or draw to express their emotions
  • Ensuring you continue to have a balanced diet and get enough rest
  • Talking about your feelings with people you trust
  • Prioritising spending quality time with loved ones when you can, especially your partner and other children
  • Finding a support group or speaking to other parents of children with cancer
