Dr Tan Bo Chuan is an experienced surgeon, with a special clinical interest in minimal access gastrointestinal surgery, covering both oncological and metabolic spectrums, and the use of endoscopy in evaluating gastrointestinal disorders.
Dr Tan completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at the National University of Malaysia (UKM) in 2009. He received residency training through the National University Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, and Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, while pursuing his Master of Medicine (Surgery) at the National University of Singapore (NUS), which he completed in 2016. In 2017, Dr Tan was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and accredited by the Specialist Accreditation Board (SAB) of Singapore.
In 2019, Dr Tan was awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) by the Ministry of Health for an Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery Fellowship at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. There, he trained under Professor Kim Hyung-Ho, a leading gastric cancer surgeon in South Korea, renowned for his work in laparoscopic gastric surgery for stomach cancer.
After completing his residency, Dr Tan served as a consultant general and upper gastrointestinal surgeon at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. By 2023, he was leading the Upper Gastrointestinal & Bariatric Surgery Unit and while concurrently progressing to become the Clinical Director of the Integrated Care for Obesity and Diabetes (ICOD) Centre in 2024. His work at the ICOD earned a Gold Award from the National Healthcare Group (NHG), highlighting the importance of collaboration between surgeons, endocrinologists, nurses, and allied health workers in the multidisciplinary care of patients with weight-related and metabolic disorders.
Dr Tan gives back to the profession by serving as a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS, and as a Clinical Block Leader (Surgery) at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, NTU. He also mentors aspiring surgeons as a core faculty member of the NHG General Surgery Residency Programme.
He has shared his surgical expertise at numerous regional and international conferences and workshops. He is actively involved in clinical research, serving as a co-investigator for projects such as establishing a standing database for bariatric surgery at KTPH and research on site-specific adipocytes’ adiponectin gene expression.
Dr Tan is currently a proctor for the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery, a joint educational programme by the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS). He has also served as the secretary for both the Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society of Singapore (OMSSS) and the Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition of Singapore (SingSPEN).
Dr Tan is fluent in English, Mandarin, Bahasa Melayu, and the dialects of Hokkien and Cantonese. He looks forward to conversing with his patients in a language they are familiar with.
