During his training he received several awards including the European Board of Urology Book Prize and the College of Surgeons Gold Medal, recognising his exceptional contribution to his urology traineeship.
In 2018 Dr Tan was the first non-UK trained urologist to be awarded the prestigious advanced robotic surgery and uro-oncology fellowship at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London, United Kingdom. This fellowship is accredited by both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS).
His previous appointments include Adjunct Assistant Professor at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Consultant Urologist and Director of Genitourinary Oncology at TTSH. During Dr Tan’s tenure at TTSH, he introduced a number of programmes and procedures including transperineal prostate biopsy under local anaesthesia, retzius-sparing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy, robot-assisted radical cystectomy with intracorporeal urinary diversion, and the enhanced recovery after cystectomy pathway.
Dr Tan believes in the importance of mentoring and knowledge sharing, and is actively involved in organising committees and teaching faculties for several regional conferences including the Asian Congress of Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery, Asian Summit on Robotic Surgery, and Urofair.
With a strong passion for research in minimally-invasive bladder and prostate cancer management, prostate cancer diagnostics and enhanced recovery after cystectomy, Dr Tan was the lead author for the paper that reported on the first and largest series of MRI-targeted prostate biopsies in Singapore. He is also an advisor for the Ministry of Health’s Agency for Care Effectiveness on the topic of MRI-targeted prostate biopsies, which has now been approved as the standard of care for the evaluation of men suspected of having prostate cancer in Singapore.
Dr Tan accepts referrals for all cancer types, with a special clinical interest in urological cancers, including that of the bladder, prostate, kidneys, testis and penis.
