Biography

Dr Tan Yew Oo was the former Professor of Medicine at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS), and Chief of Medicine at National University Hospital (NUH) and Head of the Division of Haematology-Oncology. He was a tenured faculty staff of NUS from 1978 till 1993 and during his tenure, he was instrumental in setting up the specialty of Medical Oncology at National University Hospital.

While maintaining a busy private practice, he continues to play an active part in medical education and healthcare issues. Currently, he serves in as in Clinical Risk Group of SingHealth, member of MediShield Life Council of Ministry of Health, member of National Advisory Committee of Cancer and member of Complaints Committee of Singapore Medical Council. He was also the founding Chairman of Medical Board of Farrer Park Hospital.

Dr Tan was awarded the Public Service Medal at the 2020 National Day Awards, recognising his significant contribution to public service and healthcare in Singapore. In 2021, a professorship was named in his honour – the Tan Yew Oo Professorship in Pathology at Duke-NUS which recognises the importance of pathology in cancer research and support long-term research and advancements in pathology.

Dr Tan has published in several medical and peer reviewed journals and has been invited to speak at regional and international medical meetings. Dr Tan is also actively involved in clinical trials and enrols patients into clinical trials at Icon clinics.

Dr Tan accepts referrals or second opinion for all cancer types, with special clinical interests in breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, liver cancer, lung cancer and lymphoma.
