Icon Cancer Centre introduces surgical oncology services ahead of its new integrated service oncology centre located at Mt Alvernia Hospital set to open by early 2022

Icon Cancer Centre is proud to announce the introduction of surgical oncology services at Mount Alvernia Medical Centre in the lead up to the opening of the new integrated oncology centre on the hospital’s campus which is set to open in 2022.

The service will be launched with a team of ten experienced surgical oncologists, whose specialties encompass the treatment of a wide range of cancer types including gastrointestinal, breast, lung, head and neck cancers, colorectal, liver, gynaecological cancers and sarcomas. With surgical oncology services available from April 2021 at the new Icon Surgical Oncology Centre at Mount Alvernia, cancer patients will soon have access to a greater level of comprehensive cancer care ahead of the integrated centre’s opening.  Icon ASEAN CEO Serena Wee says that the introduction of surgical oncology marks a significant milestone for Icon which will ensure patients can access the full spectrum of cancer treatment within the one location at Mount Alvernia.

“With the introduction of visiting surgical oncologists, we are proud to offer the full remit of cancer treatment including medical oncology, radiation oncology and haematology, availing access to comprehensive cancer care to patients on the Mount Alvernia Hospital campus,” Ms Wee said.

In our continuous effort to deliver excellence in clinical care, in December 2020 Icon Cancer Centre Singapore became the first oncology provider in Asia to receive the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards International (ACHSI) EQuiP Accreditation Certification. This achievement reflects a commitment to supporting excellence in patient care and services, and continuous quality improvement. This internationally recognised accreditation reflects the level of care delivered across Icon’s clinics and aligns with a continued dedication to supporting patients throughout their journey.

The introduction of surgical oncology services adds to Icon’s holistic approach to care with the addition of new services and programs like paediatric oncology services in late 2020, palliative medicine services and specialist programs such as Icon’s Young Women’s Cancer Program as well as a dedicated health screening centre.

Icon Cancer Centre also continues to have a focus on cancer research with the recent appointment of a Singapore Director of Clinical Trials.  This is an important evolution in Icon’s approach to cancer care and will allow more access to international trials across a wide range of cancers.

“The appointment of a local Singapore Director of Clinical Trials signals our commitment to cancer research and trials.  We will grow our clinical trials offering and work closely with our colleagues at Icon in Australia to introduce more international trials into Singapore and the region.”

“We are continuing to expand our services to ensure patients and their families are supported at every step. Cancer rates are only continuing to rise – we need to continue to improve treatment options to help more people in their time of need.  Being able to bring more trials and research opportunities will only propel us forward in the fight against cancer.”
