Dr Koong Heng Nung is a general surgeon by training and qualifications, specialising in thoracic surgery. After obtaining his Masters in General Surgery in 1993, he went on to specialise in thoracic surgery at the renowned Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York from 1998 to 2000.

Alongside significant practice in thoracic surgical oncology at the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) from 2000 to 2014, Dr Koong continued with emergency general surgical service at Singapore General Hospital, including trauma. In his tenure as the Head of Surgical Oncology at NCCS from 2008 to 2014, he repeatedly won awards for excellent service, exemplary educator and innovations in service improvement. Dr Koong is well known for improving medical practices on a departmental and management level and initiated the smoke-free pub legislation across Singapore.

Additionally, Dr Koong accepts referrals for all cancer types, with a special clinical interest in thoracic surgery for lung cancer. These can be indeterminate lesions in the lungs seen on x-rays or scans. He performs thoracic key-hole surgery on all types of chest conditions like benign tumours, resection of cancer spread to the lungs and lung cancers.
